The United States could not hold a 2-0 lead with under four minutes to play and eventually fell in overtime .Canada beat the US 3-2 in overtime to win their 4th consecutive Olympic gold medal in women’s hockey.

Meghan Duggan broke a scoreless tie at the 11:57 mark of the second period to give the United States a 1-0 lead. Duggan’s goal was assisted by Jocelyne Lamoreux.

The USA took a 2-0 lead at 2:01 of the third period on an Alex Carpenter power play goal that was assisted by Hilary Knight and Kelli Stack. That lead held until Canada’s improbable comeback sent the game to overtime.

Team Canada cut the USA’s lead in half with 3:26 remaining in the third period when Brianne Jenner fluttered a puck past US goalie Jessie Vetter and into the back of the net.

The United States missed an empty net goal by mere inches a couple of minutes later that would have sealed the game, then watched in horror as Canada tied the game with only 54 seconds on the clock.

Marie-Philip Poulin scored the tying goal from Canada that sent the game to overtime. Canada outshot the US 27-24 during regulation.

Poulin scored the game winner for Canada at 8:10 of the extra period on a power play, awarded after Canadian captain Haley Wickenheiser was pulled down from behind on a breakaway. Wickenheiser was initially awarded a penalty shot, but that call was overturned by the officials following a lengthy discussion.
