MINNEAPOLIS — Matt Cassel and the rest of the Vikings first-team had a strong showing in a 10-6 win over the Raiders in their preseason debut.

Cassel led an efficient touchdown drive on the Vikings’ first possession, going 5 for 6 for 62 yards – including a 22-yard connection to Kyle Rudolph who was pushed out of bounds just short of the goal line.

Matt Asiata, who is battling for the backup running back spot, capped off the drive with a one-yard touchdown plunge.

Rookie quarterback Teddy Bridgewater’s debut did not go as smoothly as hoped.

On his first play, Bridgewater rolled right and fired a 21-yard strike to Greg Jennings but it was called back on a penalty.

Bridgewater finished the night going 6 for 13 for 49 yards, getting sacked twice and fumbling once.

Anthony Barr, the first of the Vikings two first round picks, flashed his potential pass-rushing abilities and finished the game with half a sack.

Other Observations:

- Vikings rookie runningback Jerick McKinnon displayed good speed and quickness, finishing with 45 yards on 12 carries.

- Mike Zimmer’s new defensive scheme showed a willingness to be more aggressive, with eight or nine men lining up in the box multiple times.

- Kurt Coleman, who is battling for a starting spot at safety, finished with three tackles, a pass deflection and an interception.

- Wide receiver Adam Thielen, a Detroit Lakes native, seemed to be all over the field with a 15-yard reception, 26-yard punt return, and a tackle on special teams.

The Vikings continue the preseason next Saturday, playing host to Larry Fitzgerald and the Arizona Cardinals.
