The New York Yankees and St. Louis Cardinals each won the fifth and deciding games of their respective division series on Friday to advance to the championship series round of Major League Baseball's 2012 postseason. Here's a recap of all of Friday's MLB action:
Justin Verlander struck out 11 while pitching a complete-game shutout, and the Detroit Tigers beat the Oakland A's, 6-0, to win their American League Division Series, 3 games to 2. The Tigers were just three outs away from winning the series in Game 4 on Wednesday, but the A's rallied to force Game 5.
Rob Bironas kicked a 40-yard field goal as time expired, and the Tennessee Titans beat the Pittsburgh Steelers, 26-23, on Thursday night in Nashville.Bironas' kick, his fourth field goal of the game, came after Steelers' kicker Shaun Suisham had a 54-yard attempt fall short with 49 seconds remaining.

Pittsburgh (2-2) sends the league's fifth-ranked defense to face a Titans' team which will once again start Matt Hasselbeck in place of injured Jake Locker at quarterback. Tennessee (1-4) has committed 10 turnovers so far this season. The Steelers' running game was much improved with the return of Rashard Mendenhall. Pittsburgh could put up big numbers against a Titans' defense that has allowed a league-high 181 points.
Arian Foster ran for 152 yards and a touchdown, and the Houston Texans beat the New York Jets, 23-17, in East Rutherford, N.J. on Monday night. Kareem Jackson intercepted Jets' quarterback Mark Sanchez with 1:51 left to preserve the victory for Houston (5-0). The Texans and the Atlanta Falcons are the NFL's only remaining unbeaten teams.
Drew Brees threw a touchdown pass in his 48th straight game to break Johnny Unitas' 52-year-old NFL record, and the New Orleans Saints beat the San Diego Chargers, 31-24, in New Orleans on Sunday night. New Orleans (1-4) recorded its first victory of the 2012 season by coming from behind after San Diego (3-2) led, 24-14, early in the second half.
Matt Holliday went 2-for-3 with a home run and St. Louis benefitted from an umpire's call, as the Cardinals beat the Atlanta Braves, 6-3, at Turner Field on Friday. St. Louis advanced to play the Washington Nationals in a best-of-five National League Divisional Series starting on Sunday.

Sam Bradford threw two touchdown passes and the Rams' defense sacked Kevin Kolb nine times, as St. Louis beat the Arizona Cardinals, 17-3, on Thursday night. Ahead 10-3 after three quarters, St. Louis (3-2) pulled away to a 14-point lead when Bradford connected with Chris Givens on a 51-yard touchdown pass with 11:49 to play. Arizona (4-1) had two fourth quarter drives stall inside the Rams' 20-yard line with less than 6 minutes remaining.
American League Report: Orioles, Yankees and Rangers All Clinch; Tigers Lead White Sox by 3 Games
The Baltimore Orioles (92-67) completed a three-game sweep of the Boston Red Sox on Sunday with a 6-3 win at Camden Yards. The victory allowed Baltimore to remain tied atop the American League East with the New York Yankees (92-67), who rallied to defeat the Toronto Blue Jays, 9-6.
