Wild Open Season With Shootout Loss

The Minnesota Wild and Los Angeles Kings skated to a 2-2 tie after three periods and overtime, but LA came away with a 3-2 victory by winning the shootout 2-0.

Matt Cooke started the scoring for Minnesota with a deflection past LA netminder Jonathan Quick at 1:04 of the first period. Mikael Granlund poked the puck free on an aggressive forecheck and sent it to Kyle Brodziak, who sent it in front of the net toward Cooke.

Replays showed the puck definitely went off Cooke’s skate, which he angled toward the net as the puck was en route. However, the referee determined there was not a distinct kicking motion and ruled the goal counted.

The Kings tied the game on a power play goal about five minutes later. Zenon Konopka’s delay of game penalty for flipping the puck over the glass resulted in Drew Doughty’s first goal of the season and a tie score at 1-1.

The Wild earned a power play of their own late in the first period, and they capitalized when Jonas Brodin slammed home a loose puck for a 2-1 lead.

Neither team scored in the second period and penalties were kept to a minimum, save for a scrap between Minnesota’s Zenon Konopka and LA’s Kyle Clifford.

Los Angeles scored the equalizer when Jeff Carter went nearly coast-to-coast on a rush that included a move through Charlie Coyle’s legs before snapping home a shot past Niklas Backstrom at 13:14.

Backstrom failed to stop a shot in the shootout, allowing goals to Carter and Anze Kopitar while the Wild were twice stymied by Quick.

Minnesota hosts the Anaheim Ducks Saturday night at Xcel Energy Center.
