If you read it on the Internet, it must be true, right?

UCLA fans across the country certainly wish that were the case as thousands of news outlets are now reporting that the Bruins “stunned” #5 Oregon, 21-20 on a last-minute touchdown pass from quarterback Bob Jones. Unfortunately, however, there are a couple of teeny, tiny problems with the story. Just some minor details like the facts that the game never happened and that Bob Jones doesn’t exist.

The error apparently happened late Monday when the Associated Press inadvertently posted a fake article with some dummy text detailing the epic battle and Bob Jones’ late-game heroics. Sports website Deadspin first reported the mistake when it was already out on the wire and being reported by over 900 news outlets, including such noted publications as The New York Times and The Washington Post. By Tuesday morning, that number had jumped to nearly 3,000.

So congratulations to the UCLA Bruins on the biggest win (so far) of the college football season.
