Timberwolves Should Draft McCollum #9 Overall
The Timberwolves have the 9th overall pick Thursday in the NBA draft and are looking at shooting guards and big men. The Wolves should take 6’3 shooting guard C.J. McCollum if he’s still there at #9 overall. McCollum is a little known combo guard but is a pure shooter. I don’t care that he’s not the size of a typical NBA shooting guard. The Wolves need shooters and McCollum is a shooter. He averaged 23.9 points a game, shot 49 percent from the field and 51 percent from 3-point range as a senior at Lehigh.
The Wolves passed on a small college under sized shooting guard in 2009. That player is Stephen Curry. Curry has gone on to have a pretty good NBA career. The Wolves chose Ricky Rubio and Jonny Flynn ahead of Curry that year.
The Wolves are also considering Kentavious Caldwell-Pope with the 9th overall pick. I like his name but he’s not as refined as McCollum. Caldwell-Pope could become a good player but McCollum already is. The Wolves would love a chance to draft Victor Oladipo or Ben McLemore but both would likely be gone when they pick #9.
