The Twins Quest For An Ace Begins
The Twins begin their season Friday when they play at Toronto against the Blue Jays. Last year’s team easily won the American League Central Division but were quickly eliminated by the Yankees in the ALDS. The Twins were lacking a true ace starting pitcher last season and still lack that this season. One could emerge among their current starters but it’s more likely that one would need to be acquired before the trade deadline so this team doesn’t suffer the same fate as last year’s team. Cliff Lee was on their radar last year but Texas outbid the Twins to acquire him from Seattle before the deadline. Someone similar to Lee could be available before the deadline this year. The one wildcard for the Twins is how quickly prospect Kyle Gibson matures at triple-A Rochester. He has potential to be a top of the rotation type pitcher but will it be this year? Time will tell whether the Twins are aggressive in looking for an ace or comfortable to stay with the status quo.
