St. John's linebacker Maze Thompson of Shoreview is this week's MIAC Defensive Player of the Week. The Saint John's football team came from behind Saturday to beat Gustavus, 31-17, as the Johnnie defense allowed only a single field goal after halftime.
Thompson finished 12 total tackles - nine solo - which led the Johnnies in Saturday's win over the Gusties.

The St. John's football team got back to 500 overall with a 31-17 win at home over Gustavus Saturday. Gustavus led 14-10 at halftime but St. John's outscored the Gusties 21-3 in the 2nd half. Quarterback Nick Martin threw for 121 yards and a touchdown and ran for 103 yards and another score for the Johnnies.

Nick Martin threw for 309 yards and 2 touchdowns and ran for 40 yards and 3 touchdowns for the Johnnies. Rob Voshell caught 4 passes for 124 yards and Josh Bungum had 2 catches for 67 yards and a touchdown. Colin Moynihan ran for 78 yards on 5 carries including a 5-yard touchdown run.

The Johnnies lost 48-17 at Augsburg last Saturday and are 2-4 overall this season with a 0-4 record in the MIAC. St. John's has played the last 2 weeks without starting quarterback Connor Bruns. St. John's will start freshman Nick Martin at quarterback Saturday when they host St. Olaf for homecoming at 1pm. Martin is a 6'3 195 pound pocket passer from Plymouth and Wayzata High School. He was 6-8 passing for 153 yards and 2 touchdowns in relief of Connor Bruns and John Ries Saturday at Concordia-Moorhead.
