The Gopher football team defeated Illinois 17-3 at Illinois Saturday to become bowl eligible for the first time since 2009. Minnesota fell behind 3-0 but tied the game at 3 going into halftime. Donnell Kirkwood ran 28 times for 152 yards and 2 touchdowns for Minnesota and Philip Nelson threw for just 78 yards and ran for 24 yards for the Gophers.
Michigan Beats Gophers to Claim Little Brown Jug
Michigan beat the Gophers 34-13 Saturday to keep the Little Brown Jug on their sideline again. Minnesota scored the first touchdown of the game but trailed 14-7 at halftime. Philip Nelson was 13-29 passing for 142 yards and 1 touchdown with no interceptions and 37 yards rushing. Donnell Kirkwood led the Gophers rushing for 58 yards on 16 carries.
Gophers Host Michigan In Battle For Little Brown Jug
The Gopher football team trys to win their 2nd straight Big Ten game when they host Michigan at 11am Saturday morning, pregame on AM 1390-the Fan at 10am. The Gophers are 5-3 overall and 1-3 in the Big Ten. Michigan is 3-1 in the Big Ten and 5-3 overall. Michigan lost 23-9 to Nebraska last Saturday.
Gophers Pound Purdue 44-28
The Gopher football team earned their first Big Ten win of the season with a 44-28 victory at TCF Bank Stadium over Purdue Saturday afternoon. Minnesota jumped on the Boilermakers early and led 34-7 at halftime. Freshman quarterback Philip Nelson made his 2nd college start and threw for 246 yards and 3 touchdowns with no interceptions. He also ran for 37 yards.
Badgers Pound Gophers 38-13
The Gophers lost 38-13 at Wisconsin Saturday afternoon. The big surprise was that head coach Jerry Kill decided to start red shirt freshman Philip Nelson of Mankato at quarterback. Nelson was the 3rd string quarterback for much of the season and the intention was for him to red-shirt this season. Nelson in his first start was 13-24 passing for 149 yards and 2 touchdowns with 2 interceptions. He also ran for 67 yards on 16 carries.
Gophers Suffer Homecoming Loss to Northwestern 21-13
The Gopher football team lost 21-13 Saturday afternoon on Homecoming to Northwestern. The Gophers had numerous chances in the final 5 minutes but Max Shortell's attempts at the end zone on 3rd and 4th and goal with just over 2 mintes left failed. Shortell started the game but was replaced by Marquis Gray in the 2nd quarter. Gray played until the end of the 3rd quarter when he aggravated his ankle injury.
