ST. CLOUD — St. Cloud State University is honoring one of the most decorated hockey figures in Minnesota history.

The school announced that the National Hockey and Event Center will be renamed the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center.

President Earl Potter says the university wanted a name that is significant to the history of Minnesota.

Potter was joined by Head Coach Bob Motzko and Dan Brooks – son of the legendary coach.

Motzko – who was a graduate assistant under Brooks – says it’s a special day for the university and the program.

Brooks was best known for being the head coach of the gold medal-winning 1980 Olympic team. His son, Dan says it’s a true honor for the family. He says his father was never happier than the one year he spent coaching the Huskies.

Motzko says it’s the perfect way to honor a man who did so much for the sport of hockey and SCSU.

Brooks spent one year as the head coach for the Huskies during the 1986-87 season. He is credited with helping the school move from division three to division one.

Brooks died in a car accident in 2003. He was 66 years old.

Potter says the university will not seek one primary sponsor, but rather a group of companies that will get naming rights on pillars or other areas of the arena.

SCSU says they are about $1.5 million away from their fundraising goal for the hockey center renovation. The project will total over $30 million when completed.
