Sartell Sabres Fall in State Tournament [Audio]
The Sartell Sabres and the Simley Spartans faced off in the first round of the state tournament. Michael Avwunuma, of the Spartans, rushed for a 1 yard Touchdown to give the Spartans the early 7-0 lead. With less than 4 minutes left in the first half, Darek Stachowski, of the Sabres, rushed for a 1 yard Touchdown to even the score at 7. Cole Veith rushed for a 25 yard Touchdown on the Spartans following drive which gave them the 14-7 lead heading into halftime.
Michael Busch and Matt Amspoker, of the Spartans, connected on a 47 yard Touchdown pass, but the extra point was unsuccessful. Darek Stachowski rushed for his second 1 yard Touchdown of the game on the Sabres following drive, but Sabres still trailed 20-13. The Spartans quickly answered with a Jake Olmstead 10 yard rushing Touchdown. The Spartans lead 27-13 entering the fourth quarter.
With under 8 minutes left in the game, Michael Avwunuma rushed for his second Touchdown of the game which gave the Spartans the 34-13 lead. In a two play drive for the Sabres, Brandon Snoberger and Jake Lieberg connected on a 52 yard Touchdown to pull within two possessions. Michael Busch rushed for a 29 yard Touchdown to put the Spartans back up by three possessions.
The Simley Spartans defeated the Sartell Sabres 44-20 in the opening round of the state tournament.
