OAKLAND, Calif. -- Rookie starter Trevor May gave up four runs and walked seven in two innings in his first major league start as the Twins fell to the Athletics 9-4 last night.

May blew an early lead by walking in runs in the first and third innings and allowed a based-loaded single by Josh Donaldson that drove in two in the second inning.

Samuel Deduno started the third inning for May and pitched three innings, giving up a two-run homer to Stephen Vogt in the fifth inning and a three-run shot to Derek Norris in the sixth.

Oakland starter Jeff Samardzija lasted six innings and allowed only two runs on seven hits for his third win since being traded from the Chicago Cubs.

Phil Hughes and the Twins will try to snap a 12-game losing streak to the A's this afternoon.
