GARRISON -- About one hundred people enjoyed a beautiful day for kite boarding at the 11th annual Kite Crossing event on Lake Mille Lacs today.

The event features an eight-mile race, freestyle competition, and free snow-kiting lessons for anybody who comes out.

Clear skies, mid-30s temperatures, and strong winds made for a perfect day for kite boarding enthusiasts like Brian Borer.

"The sun is shining, the wind is blowing -- that's what we like out here," Borer says. "We're having a fun time."

"It's really nice that all of the organizers put together this [event] every year," Borer says. "We all just love to come out here and spread the sport [and] have fun."

Kite boarder Jim Watkins of Minneapolis says the event is a fun time to embrace Minnesota winters.

"It's a really fun community of people in Minnesota of all ages, all shapes and sizes, and all backgrounds," Watkins says.

"People who just love chasing the wind."

Watkins says this is one of his favorite times of the year.

"Spring has sprung as far as I can tell -- great weather, great sunshine, [and] I get to see all of the kiters that I might run into only once or twice a year," Watkins says.

"It's just a great opportunity to gather and spend time with friends."

Kite Crossing continues tomorrow (Sunday) on Lake Mille Lacs in Garrison and is free and open to the public.
