DETROIT, Mich. -- After a good start, the Minnesota Vikings let mistakes and sloppy play defeat them in today's 16-14 loss against the Detroit Lions.

Rookie quarterback Teddy Bridgewater and the rest of the offense looked sharp early on against the NFL's top-ranked defense - building a 14-0 lead in the second quarter.

Running back Matt Asiata was active in the first quarter scoring drive, churning out tough yards on the ground and moving the chains on a couple of receptions.

Asiata capped off the drive with a two-yard touchdown plunge - his seventh rushing touchdown of the season.

Bridgewater hit Greg Jennings on an eight-yard touchdown pass to give the Vikings a two score lead with 10 minutes remaining in the first half.

The Lions defense got to Bridgewater later in the second quarter, intercepting the rookie on two consecutive possessions.

The Detroit Lions would then score 16 unanswered points on three field goals by Matt Prater and a touchdown pass from Matthew Stafford to Golden Tate.

Vikings kicker Blair Walsh missed one field goal and later had a chip-shot blocked to add to the sting of the defeat.

With one second remaining, the Vikings hoped for a miracle as they sent Walsh out to attempt a would-be game-winning 68-yard field goal - which would have shattered the NFL record - but Walsh's kick fell short.

The loss drops the Vikings to 6-8 on the season and they will travel to sunny Miami to take on the 7-7 Dolphins next Sunday.
