Two games into the 2011-2012 Vikings season, and many things have become evident. Adrian Peterson is still the focal point of the Vikings offense. Donovan McNabb seems to have the same reaction whether he throws a completion, incompletion, touchdown or interception. But perhaps the most telling thing behind the 0-2 start is the fact that the Vikings have closely resembled Jekyll and Hyde.

Week 1 against the Chargers, the Vikings had a 17-7 lead, only to lose 24-17. In week 2 against the Buccaneers, the Vikings had a 17-0 lead, only to lose 24-20. You simply can’t win games in this league if you can’t keep teams out of the end zone in the second half. The Vikings have been outscored 41-3 in the second half of their 2 games this year. What is causing these collapses? Many things can be blamed, but I think the biggest reason is that the team goes into halftime with a lead and takes their foot off the accelerator. In order to win games, you have to be aggressive until the final whistle.

If the team is going to compete this year, they need to find ways to finish games, and it starts with being more aggressive in terms of offensive play calling. I would like to see more deep shots from McNabb and less predictable play calling.

With Detroit next weekend and 2 week opponents after that, I look at the Detroit game as a must win, and look for the playbook to open up against the Lions. If McNabb should struggle or not be able to move the ball downfield, we may see the future in Christian Ponder sooner than expected. Of course, a win is the cure for what ails a losing team, so hopefully business will be taken care of on Sunday.
