Hanowski, Flames Torch Wild Sunday Night

Any excitement the Wild fans had to see SCSU’s Ben Hanowski make his debut at the Xcel Energy Center as a professional was quickly erased in a 4-1 Flames win.

Calgary got on the board first when defenseman Mark Cunardi scored at 13:37 of the opening period on a power play, with assists given to TJ Brodie and Mike Cammalleri.

The Wild answered with a spectacular goal from Zach Parise with just over a minute left in the first period. Charlie Coyle found Parise in front of the net, and the Wild forward cut sharply across the net to beat Calgary goaltender Joey MacDonald to make the score 1-1 at the first intermission.

Hanowski logged 4:09 of ice time in the first period, collecting two hits and had his only shot of the period blocked. The Wild outshot the Flames 14-5 overall in the period.

Mikael Backlund got his eighth goal of the season for the Flames at 8:50 of the second period for a 2-1 Calgary lead. Assists were credited to Lee Stempniak and Sven Baertschi on the second period’s only tally between the two teams.

Hanowski skated for 3:59 of the second period and registered a shot on goal on an aggressive drive to the net that knocked down fellow SCSU grad Matt Cullen and temporarily knocked him out of the game.

Shots on goal favored Minnesota 25-12 after two periods.

The Flames pulled away further when Cammalleri scored at 12:40 of the third period on the power play for a 3-1 Calgary lead. An empty net goal by Jiri Hudler late in the third made it a 4-1 final.

Hanowski skated for 5:37 in the third period, for a total of 13:45 in the game. The Little

The Wild ended the game with a 35-24 advantage in shots on goal.
