MINNEAPOLIS -- The #14 Minnesota Gophers men's hockey team could not complete a comeback against the Michigan State Spartans and lost 4-2 on Friday night.

After a scoreless first period, Minnesota fell behind early in the second as the Spartans took a 1-0 lead just 44 seconds into the middle period.

Minnesota's Kyle Rau tied the game later in the period, but Michigan State answered back with two consecutive goals as the Gophers were looking at a 3-1 deficit midway through the third period.

With just under five minutes remaining, Rau scored again on a power play that cut the Spartans' lead in half.

Trailing 3-2, the Gophers could not get the game-tying goal and Michigan State iced the game by scoring another goal with under a minute remaining.
