St. Cloud State forward Cory Thorson is an imposing figure standing at 6’2″ with a frame well over 200 lbs and a with a shock of red hair flowing out from beneath his helmet.

The power forward played in just 12 games in his freshman season, tallying one assist. He made the most out of increased ice time during his sophomore season in 2011-12, playing in 39 games thanks in part to the departures of Mitch MacMillan and Cam Reid, along with the injury to Drew LeBlanc.

He was named the William Radovich Award winner as most improved Husky after his sophomore season, in which he charted six goals and eight assists.

This season Thorson scored 13 goals and eight assists from the Huskies third line, adding scoring depth to an already potent offense.

Paired with Joey Benik and Brooks Bertsch during the postseason, Thorson has notched three goals and one assist so far in two games. Thorson says the line has great chemistry and has been on another level so far in the NCAA tournament.

With three teams in the Frozen Four this season that have never been (Mass-Lowell, Quinnipiac and SCSU) and another team that hasn’t been to the tourney in 61 years, Thorson sees this Frozen Four as a great opportunity to grow college hockey.

The return of LeBlanc this season after suffering a gruesome broken leg last year during what would turn out to be his first senior year. While the captain has been a great influence on the ice, as well as a Hobey Baker Award finalist, Thorson says LeBlanc’s work ethic has been an inspiration off the ice as well.

Thorson says St. Cloud State is proud of what they have been able to accomplish so far this season, but is careful to note that they are not satisfied with anything less than a national title.
