Day One of the Minnesota State High School League's Wrestling Tournament Thursday and two Central Minnesota teams faced statewide competition. In Class AA, the Foley Falcons took third place while in Class A, the Pierz Pioneers took fifth.

The Falcons completed their dual meet season today by placing 3rd at the State tournament. Lead by 195 pound senior Mitch Struffert the falcons beat Pequot Lakes/ Pine River-Backus 35-27 in the first round of the tournament. Next came Scott West in what would become one of the best duals of the day, but unfortunately Foley would fall 30-23. Senior Luke Kelvington picked up a huge win over 2nd ranked Derek Dahlke in the dual, and Tyler Midas followed with an impressive 17 to 8 major decision over his opponent. At 5:00 Thursday night the only thing that stood between Foley and a 3rd place finish was the defending champion Kasson-Mantorville Komets. Mitch Rothfork, an 8th grader for the falcons, got the scoring started with a pin in the 113 pound weight class. Foley got 2 more pins from Randy Jenson and Tyler Midas, in route to their 38-20 victory. Foley finished the season with a 27-4 record.

Championship Semi Finals: Foley 23, Scott West 30

Class A

Pierz Pioneers

Pierz got big wins from Brett Kapsner and Jordan Goebal in the first round, but they fell to the Gophers from Chatfield 40-18. The loss fired the pioneers up in the consolation semi finals and they beat Bertha- Hewitt/ Verndale 39-27. Seniors Chris Ortman and Evan Woitalla picked up back-to-back pins in the match, and Kolten Eischens put on an offensive explosion in his 18-3 technical fall victory. Sibley East was the final opponent for Pierz, and the consolation championship was on the line. Brandon Sullivan picked up the first Pierz victory of the match when he grappled his way to a 6-4 victory in the 120 pound weight class. The pioneers kept things rolling from there and won the dual by a score of 35-26. Pierz finishes the season with a 27-2 record on the season.
