Islanders Chase Backstrom And Beat Wild
The Minnesota Wild lost 4-1 at the New York Islanders Wednesday night. Niklas Backstrom allowed 3 goals and was pulled from the game early in the 2nd period. He had 16 saves. Jose Theodore replaced him and had 21 saves and 1 goal allowed. John Madden scored the lone Minnesota goal. The Wild are 33-25-6 and with 72 points are in 11th place in the West, 2 points back of the last playoff spot.
SCSU Men’s Basketball Upsets Augustana
The St. Cloud State men's basketball team upset Augustana 79-73 Wednesday night in Sioux Falls, South Dakota in the quarterfinals of the NSIC tournament. SCSU was led by Taylor Witt with 39 points and Josh Ortmann added 13 points. The Huskies improve to 14-13 this season and will play 2nd seeded University of Mary at Concordia-St. Paul at 7:30pm Saturday in the NSIC tournament semifinals.
Gopher Men’s Basketball Chokes At Northwestern
The Gopher men's basketball team continued their slide Wednesday night falling 68-57 at Northwestern. Minnesota led by 6 at halftime and by as many as 10 points in the 2nd half before they imploded. Northwestern made 7-15 from 3-point range in the 2nd half to pull away. Trevor Mbakwe led the Gophers with 14 points and 12 rebounds and Maverick Ahanmisi added 7 points in 32 minutes making his first college start.
Timberwolves Win At Detroit
The Timberwolves won 116-105 at Detroit Wednesday night to earn their 5th road win of the year. Kevin Love had 20 points and 20 rebounds and now has 48 straight double-doubles for Minnesota. Anthony Randolph saw a lot more playing time with Darko Milicic not with the team and he scored 19 points and 10 rebounds and Jonny Flynn had 14 assists.
Twins Down Pirates 4-2; Hughes Homers
The Twins defeated the Pittsburgh Pirates 4-2 in Bradenton, Florida Wednesday afternoon. Brian Duensing threw 2 shutout innings with 2 hits allowed and 2 strikeouts to get the win. Pat Neshek threw 1 shutout inning for Minnesota. Danny Valencia went 2-3 with 2 RBIs and Luke Hughes hit a solo homerun for the Twins.
Lakers Top Timberwolves; Love Continues Streak
The Timberwolves lost 90-79 to the L.A. Lakers at Target Center Tuesday night. Wesley Johnson led the Wolves with 20 points and Kevin Love added 13 points and 11 rebounds. Love continues his double-double streak and now it's at 47 games. Kobe Bryant led the Lakers with 24 points on 8-18 shooting. Minnesota is 14-47 and will play at Detroit at 6:30 tonight.
