Johnnie Football Blanks Northwestern College

The St. John’s football team began their season with a 34-0 shutout win over Northwestern College Saturday afternoon in Collegeville. St. John’s led 27-0 at halftime. Stephen Johnson ran for 114 yards and a touchdown and Nick Schneider ran for 34 yards and a touchdown for the Johnnies. Connor Bruns threw for 137 yards and 2 touchdowns for St. John’s. John Ries was 6-10 passing for 43 yards for St. John’s.

SCSU Football Starts Practice Thursday Night

The St. Cloud State football team began practice Thursday night at Husky Stadium. SCSU returns quarterback Phillip Klaphake as the team's starting quarterback. The 6'1 185 pound sophomore lost his top receiver from last season, Fred Williams. Williams finished his SCSU career in 2010 holding numerous SCSU records. The Huskies do get running back Brandon Geiss back from injury and return running backs Damon Treat and Dante Steward.

Ivy League Slashes Number of Full-Contact Football Practices to Avoid Injuries

In light of recent studies indicating college players sustain more total hits to the head in practices than in actual games, the Ivy League announced Wednesday it will now only permit two full-contact practices per week during the season, down from the allowable five under the current NCAA guidelines.

Any other practices cannot include contact or live tackles, and no player may be “taken to the ground.”
