The St. Cloud State football team looks to bounce back after a 25-21 home loss to Minnesota State-Mankato last Saturday at SCSU's Husky Stadium. St. Cloud State is off to a disappointing 1-2 start and will play at Wayne State in Nebraska at 1pm Saturday.

Gray Ruled Out For Gophers Saturday

Gopher starting quarterback Marquis Gray has been ruled out by the Gophers for Saturday's game at home against Syracuse because of a high ankle sprain to his left ankle. Sophomore Max Shortell will get the start at quarterback with Gray out. Gopher head coach Jerry Kill says there isn't a quarterback controversy with Shortell and Gray and that freshman Philip Nelson will be the backup to Shortell this Saturday.

Mavericks Edge SCSU 25-21

The St. Cloud State football team lost 25-21 Saturday night in the battle for the Traveling Training Kit. SCSU took a 21-16 lead on a Phil Klaphake to Chad Peterson 44 yard touchdown pass in the 3rd quarter. Mankato scored the final 9 points to win including the go-ahead touchdown with 4:21 left.

Tommies Rout Johnnies In Collegeville

St. Thomas scored 29 straight points from the 2nd quarter to the 3rd quarter to put the game out of reach and beat rival St. John's 43-21. Connor Bruns threw for 316 yards and 2 touchdowns with 4 interceptions for the Johnnies. St. John's managed just 24 yards rushing in the game. Josh Bungum had 9 catches for 105 yards and Taylor Freetly had 7 catches for 89 yards and a touchdown for St. John's.

Shortell Leads Gophers to 28-23 Win Over Western Michigan

Sophomore quarterback Max Shortell replaced an injured Marquis Gray in the first half and threw 3 touchdown passes in route to a 28-23 Gopher win over Western Michigan Saturday afternoon. Shortell was 10-17 passing for 188 yards and 3 touchdowns. Gray left the game with what he's calling a minor ankle injury. A.J. Barker led the Gophers with 5 catches for 101 yards and 3 touchdowns and Donnell Kirkwood led Minnesota with 110 yards rushing.

Johnnie/Tommie Preview With Jim Gagliardi (Audio)

The St. John's football team hosts rival St. Thomas in both team's MIAC opener Saturday at 1pm at Clemens Stadium in Collegeville. Both teams are 2-0. St. John's is coming off a 3-point win over UW-Eau Claire last Saturday in Eau Claire. Both the Johnnies and Tommies beat UW-Eau Claire by 3 points this season. St. Thomas is ranked #7 in the Nation in the latest Division III poll. St. John's is receiving votes in the top 25 poll.

SCSU Football Gets Set For MSU-Mankato Saturday (Audio)

The St. Cloud State football team will play rival Minnesota State-Mankato Saturday night at 6pm. The Huskies are 1-1 after a blowout win at Upper Iowa Saturday night. SCSU Routs Upper Iowa In Bounce Back Win

The St. Cloud State football team earned their first win of the year 45-20 Saturday night at Upper Iowa. SCSU scored 20 first quarter points and cruised to the win. Michael Walker ran for 109 yards and 2 touchdowns, Phil Klaphake threw for 253 yards and 2 touchdowns, and both Eli Shoemaker and Ledell White had TD catches for the Huskies.

Johnnie Football Edges UW-Eau Claire 31-28

The St. John's football team snuck by UW-Eau Claire Saturday 31-28 to improve to 2-0. St. John's scored 21 straight points to lead 28-14 and withstood a late comeback attempt by Eau Claire to win. Connor Bruns threw for 251 yards and 2 touchdowns and he ran for 45 yards for the Johnnies. Stephen Johnson ran for 54 yards and 1 touchdown. Rob Voshell and Max Forster each had 1 TD catch for St. John's.
