Gophers’ Close to Extension for Tubby

Norwood Teague starting his new job as Athletic Director at the University of Minnesota Monday and he said they are close to working out a long term contract for Men's basketball coach Tubby Smith. He says they may have an announcement soon. Teague inherits a department that has stability in his 3 revenue sports. Jerry Kill is locked up to a long term contract as football coach and Don Lucia is firmly entrenced as head men's hockey coach.

Tech’s Heysse to Play Basketball at St. John’s

St. Cloud Tech recent graduate Kevin Heysse will play basketball at St. John's University starting in 2012-2013. Heysse is a 6'6 forward who was a solid rebounder, shot blocker and 3-point shooter at Tech. He was a all conference performer in the Central Lakes Conference for 2 seasons and started for Tech for the past 3 years. Tech was 15-12 in 2011-2012.

SCSU Basketball Signs 6’11 Center

The St. Cloud State men's basketball team signed 6'11 230 pound center Chris Larson from Hudson, Iowa. Larson is a transfer from the University of Oregon where he was a reshirt junior in the Ducks basketball program. Prior to playing at Oregon he played two seasons at Black Hawk Community College in Moline, Illinois where in his last season there averaged 6.7 points, 4.4 rebounds and 3.4 blocks a game.

University of Minnesota Hires Norwood Teague As A.D.

The University of Minnesota introduced Norwood Teague as their new Athletic Director at a press conference Monday afternoon. Teague has spent the last 6 years as the Athletic Director at Virginia Commonwealth. Teague will make a base salary of $400,000 which is on the low end of Big Ten Athletic Directors. He replaces the retiring Joel Maturi and will start July 1.

Legendary Tennessee Women’s Basketball Coach Pat Summitt to Step Down

Pat Summitt, one of the pioneers of women’s basketball, is retiring as head coach of the University of Tennessee women’s program.

Summitt, who has amassed 1,098 wins in 38 seasons at Tennessee en route to eight national championships, will be named head coach emeritus.

Gophers’ Mbakwe Is Coming Back

Gopher basketball forward Trevor Mbakwe has made it official he's coming back for a 6th season in college basketball after being granted a medical redshirt by the NCAA last month. Mbakwe played just 7 games this season before suffering a torn ACL in his left knee in a tournament game against Dayton. Mbakwe averaged 14.0 points and 9.1 rebounds a game this season.

SCSU Basketball Signs 4

The St. Cloud State Basketball team signed 4 players to national letters of intent Thursday. Three of the 4 are from Wisconsin. The players are 6'3 guard Jordan Poydras from De Pere, Wisconsin, 6'2 guard Tyson Kalien from Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin, 6'5 forward Seth Mortag from Brookfield, Wisconsin and transfer guard Preston McCourt from Dakota County Tech College in Eagan.

Gophers’ Armelin To Transfer

The Gopher men's basketball team is losing shooting guard Chip Armelin. He has requested and has been granted his release from his scholarship so he can leave the program. Armelin averaged 5.2 points in 13.7 minutes a game this past season but his minutes diminished as the season progressed. The sophomore has 2 years of eligibility remaining.

NCAA Title Game: Kentucky Beats Kansas 67-59 To Win National Championship

Doron Lamb scored 22 points, and Kentucky held off a spirited Kansas rally to beat the Jayhawks 67-59 in the NCAA title game in New Orleans on Monday night. The win gave the Wildcats (38-2) their eighth national championship in school history and first since 1998.
