This was the eighth year for our group of anglers that make an annual trek to Island View Lodge on Rainy Lake. Although every year is a little different, the one common theme that runs through the entire eight year period is the successful walleye angling we encounter.
Every summer I make an effort to explore a few new lakes to see if there are bodies of water I am not familiar with that need some attention. I also make a concerted effort to spend time looking for new fishing spots on my list of regulars. Either way, there is some research that is done before I get to the landing.
It was going to be an interesting day on the water. I had two enthusiastic anglers in my boat that had limited fishing experience. As we were casting weedless jigs and jigworms along the deep weedline, it became apparent to me that they had not developed the feel and finesse for this style of angling.
When it comes to ice fishing, Dave Genz is probably the most recognizable name in the industry. There isn’t too much he hasn’t accomplished in the hard water world. However, what most anglers don’t realize about Genz is that he knows as much about river fishing as he does ice angling.
It was the ninth year of our annual fishing trip to Island View Lodge on Rainy Lake in Northern Minnesota. During the previous years, we had been very successful in learning the routine for catching walleye on the mid lake reefs and structure. This year was promising to be a bit different.
Over the years, I have read a kajillion articles on how to catch spring panfish. Some of them have been excellent and some have been a little far fetched in my opinion. I believe catching spring panfish is not that difficult if one sticks to the basics.
Once the lakes start freezing over, finding an open day in the busy schedule of ice fishing legend, Dave Genz, is not an easy task. However, I was able to catch up with him in-between fishing trips and sit down for a leisurely chat and breakfast.
Every year at the start of the winter season, anglers get all pumped up about spending time on the ice. They often buy some new equipment and make big plans about how they are going to target fish a little differently this year. However, when it comes right down to it, they frequently fall back into the same rut of doing what they have always done during the winter months.
